Note: I only made note of my loco hauled trains at this time.
The usual midweek evening moves paid off as I picked up a required 47 plus a pair of class 25s down to International for a late running Euston train back. For the overnight move my old favourite looked best so I did the Chester shuffle which finished with me taking the same 86/3 up to Warrington that I had down to New Street. I'm sure that wasn't what I was hoping for. The usual mob of North Wales bashers were up there with the gen and the locos quoted were very interesting.
I started by going for the Leeds – Llandudno which was headed by the rare HM 40040. None of us were to know that would be its last working. I swear I can still hear the fire bells ringing as it pulled away from the Junction after I had got off. You probably know that it was failed at Llandudno for that very reason and there were many people waiting to get it on its return journey because they were out of position in the morning. I went on to score with seven successive class 40 haulages giving me eight for the day. So I had SP 15 back to Abergele where I awaited the arrival of HM 49 but what was this? The loco had a centre headcode so that ruled out 49 and wow, the 1118 Crewe was a double header with HA 150, ex-works, on top of 49. In fact 40049 worked back instead of the failed 40040 later that day. I continued to make my way down to the Junction with LO 35 for the 1300 hrs Boat. That was big today with HM 70 heading it so it was worth waiting for. (Rhetorical question, how come this train is always late?). Never mind because we made Chester in time for LO 42 on the 1418 Crewe – Holyhead which took us straight back to Llandudno!
Now we heard there was a class 40 working out of Liverpool. To get to it we needed to return to Chester for the DMU to Rock Ferry. It was a tight connection, the unit ran late and we started to flap, big time. Wow, they held the EMU for one minute for us to connect and we arrived at Lime Street with a few minutes to spare. SP 126 was a good loco but we were going for another one at Preston which alas failed to produce. Oh well, never mind, its now down to Crewe and then back again having viewed the locos that were set up for the overnight dragging.
