I got to New Street in time for the 25s on Aberystwyth train and got back from Wolves to catch the Tinsley Terror railtour. This had two 37s into New Street for a pair of 20s out to Sheffield. Adrian and Steve, two of Graham's friends were also on this tour. There was no time to waste at Sheffield and we were straight onto the six car DMU for Tinsley, totally packed out and not gripped which made it feel somewhat pointless buying a ticket for that stretch. This unit covered the rare line from Brightside to Tinsley where it terminated leaving us with a ¼ mile walk to get to the depot. Surprisingly the layout of the locos at Tinsley left me without anything decent to photograph so I concentrated more on the sales stands looking for the booklets that listed locos by shed rather than number. (Dalescroft were the first I found to do them in this format but none I bought survived to the present age). I made my way back to the DMU expecting to meet up with Graham again but he had been unable to find the very sales stand that he had suggested to me and so missed it.
Whilst waiting at Sheffield for the tour train to return I photed a Deltic that had worked in on another tour train. Then in rolled a required 47/3 on a southbound train and this was too good to miss as far as I was concerned. I took it Chesterfield where I spotted Ken and Jane on the other platform so I popped over there to chat to them for a few minutes before my next move. They were waiting for the next train to Sheffield to catch the tour having bailed off that train at Derby on the way up. Their train turned out to be a class 45 running 45 minutes late! I've no idea whether they made it or not.
Meanwhile I was off to Derby with an ETH Duff for an across platform leap onto … the very 47/3 I had got off at Chesterfield! Well I can only score it once but I needed to get to Birmingham to catch the returning tour train and get the 37s I had missed in the morning. The train was gripped straight out of Derby but I the Midland Railtourer ticket I had bought yesterday gave me validity for this move. I was now in position to take the 37s on the railtour as far as Worcester, returning with Graham's friends to New Street on the DMU. It was still early, well not very dark, so I took a train to Coventry, the return from Aberystwyth and was back in time for S19, the Glasgow sleeper. I knew that was going to have a required 83 on it which I could do up to Wolverhampton for the Brighton back home. It had been a worthwhile day with the tour producing three new engines.
